Data Loss and Your Risk

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

It seems as though not a week goes by that there is not some news regarding a major system breach.  The government in it’s infinite wisdom, has created new regulations which could put a small business out of business in the event they have a security problem.  The interesting part about this, is many of the most severe computer break-ins happen in the government!

Smartphones are increasingly being used in business.  People who would not have given a second look to these years ago, have now joined the bandwagon. And now that they have a smartphone, they naturally need to have access to their company information.  They regularly send documents and spreadsheets from the office to their mobile devices.  While email is far from secure, the main concern when information is received on the smartphone, is its portability is also a very weak link.

Most never realize the implications they and their company will face if their they are the cause of personally identifiable information getting out.  How many people set pass codes on their devices?  How many encrypt their data?

I was talking with a client a few months ago and she mentioned that she has lost her mobile device in the past.  Several years ago I was in a conversation with a person who served on a board with me, and he said a person he  knew lost a laptop with medical information on it.  He also said there was no protection on the notebook.

If you carry a mobile device it is your obligation to make sure it is secure.  If someone got their hands on it, at that point it becomes very easy for them to create a social engineering attack on you and those whose information is on your device.  If the identity theft is against you, you’re the one who is going to be spending countless hours on correcting the situation.  If the identity theft is against someone else and you are listed as the cause, you could be facing thousands and thousands of dollars in fines.

Don’t Look Now But You’ve Been Targeted For Identity Theft

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Ok, so you play by the rules.  You don’t surf porn sites, you don’t gamble online, you even make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date.  So how is it you’ve been targeted for identity theft?  You can thank Epsilon for that.

In last week’s Wise Guy Wednesday column, we wrote about the security breach at Epsilon.  To bring those of you who have yet to read last week’s article “Privacy on the Internet? Fuhgeddaboutdit!”, here is a brief review.  Epsilon is a marketing company focusing on Internet technologies such as social media and captures information such as email addresses.  Large corporations such as Disney, American Express, Target, Citibank, Chase, TD Ameritrade and hundreds of others are all clients of Epsilon.

In the old days (before last week), most email based attacks were very generic, the email tried to get you to enter specific information or go to an embedded link.  But because the contents could apply to anyone, like a good boy, you ignored it.

Now because of the Epsilon breach, hundreds of thousands of people are susceptible to very targeted email attacks.  As Epsilon knows that you shop at Target or maybe you vacation at one of the Disney properties.  You receive an email from Target describing a great new barbecue grill and the special low pricing.  By clicking the link you are assured to reserve on in your name.  Or perhaps you get an invitation from Disney and they would like to offer you two nights free if you stay for three nights at one of their resorts at Walt Disney World.  All you need to do is click the link and login.  In both of these scenarios, you click the link, enter your information, and game’s on!

If your like many people, at this point you just want to hire a HITman to take care of the genius who let the breach happen in the first place.

I Just Won a BMW

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Earlier today I was informed that I won a new BMW in an online promotion.  Well that is  what is in the email, so it must be true.  At least that is what Chris Shedd wrote me.

It seems the only thing I needed to do was provide my full name, address, date of birth, telephone number and country.  Then contact Mr. Kelvin Williams of the BMW Automobile Company.

Oh, according to Mark White,I have also won 750,000 GBP (pounds).  I guess this is my luck day.  As long as I don’t click the  link or reply back.

Obviously the spammers and identity thefts are still out there.

Cybercrime On The Rise

Friday, March 26th, 2010

It doesn’t seem that a day goes by where there isn’t some new virus, hacker attack or exploit in the news.

We see a lot of computers come in to our Clifton Park computer repair center, loaded with spyware.  Many times it is from children or guests using the computer to surf the Web.

When the computers come in we strongly recommend that every password the user has get changed.  While this may be quite a bit of work, the ramifications for not doing so are great.  They include impersonation in social media sites, financial ID theft, money transfers and more.

If you find yourself in the position where your computer has been compromised, do not change the passwords from that computer.  Make sure you change them from a computer you know is safe.Preview
