Take photos of your possessions before you go away.
Bring the memory card where the pictures are stored with you.

In the event of a break-in or fire, you can provide the card to the insurance adjuster.

Even if you're not going on vacation, you can still take the pictures and leave them in another location.

This should help getting claims resolved quicker.
